David Spiby – Stubbin Wood
My connection with Stubbin Wood School is through my son Joe. He came to the nursery here and then went on to Brookfiled school. That was fro 1990 until 2001. He always seemed to enjoy his time here.
One of the things that Joe really enjoyed was football coaching. He loved football in fact he still does now. Sports were good fun at Stubbin Wood and there was a match each year between the staff and the pupils. It got a bit violent sometimes and there was lots of cheating but all in all it was god fun. I can’t remember who won most of the matches. I think we were about even between the staff and pupils.
Joe used to talk about all his teachers and he had his favourites. I found out after a while that the ones he didn’t like were the ones that made him work hard.
The other thing about school Joe loved were the residential trips. These were when the children could go away on visits and some of the visits were really exciting. Whenever I asked Joe about a residential trip he would say he hadn’t liked it but I knew he had as he couldn’t wait for the next one.
This old school hasn’t changed much. I mean the buildings are more or less the same and it is time to knock them down. They did put a fence around the school and that stopped a lot of vandalism but that is all you could see from the outside that is different.
The new school is going to be marvellous from what I have heard about it although I have yet to see it. There are going to be lots of sports facilities even a swimming pool so I think the children will be happy when they move to the new school next year.
